This summer, the Boston Celtics have seemingly been on a mission to try and better position themselves to come home with the Larry O’Brien Trophy in 2023 after falling two wins shy of accomplishing such a feat just two months back.
As things currently stand, it would appear that they’ve managed to do exactly this…at least on paper.
Addressing two of the team’s most glaring weak spots in both bench scoring and secondary playmaking with two of their main free agency acquisitions, the C’s look to be heading into the upcoming campaign as one of the most well-rounded rotations in the association and, more importantly, as the favorites to win the NBA Finals.
That said, even with all these advancements to their lineup, there are some who believe that another major splash still must be made to solidify their chances of hoisting banner No. 18 come the conclusion of next season, and a deal for Nets star Kevin Durant is oft penciled in as being said splash.
Now, in all likelihood, such a transaction will not wind up being made, as Brooklyn’s asking price is just too high for Boston to realistically consider, though, apparently, Brad Stevens and co. did try to finagle their way into a deal last month with a trade offer that would have sent Jaylen Brown borough bound.
Fortunately, nothing wound up being made of this, and, in time, the KD talks started to grow quieter and quieter.
Fast forward about a month later, however, and we find the NBA news cycle once again talking about the Durant hoopla after he reiterated his desire to be traded. Of course, this has resulted in fans and media outlets alike all discussing the concept of the Boston Celtics throwing their hat into the ring in an effort to land the megastar.
Since these rumblings resurfaced, however, the shamrocks have been found following up their previous blunders by keeping things close to the vest.
The only reports pertaining to Boston when it comes to these resurfacing trade demands is a rather recent one discussing how, in any potential negotiations, Robert Williams III is “not available.”
Now, on the surface, this is absolutely a great thing to see, as Time Lord is a budding start in the league who helped lead the charge for the C’s top-ranked defensive unit last season.
However, with the report, it does beg the question: where the heck was this sentiment when Brown was being pursued by Brooklyn?
Again, we get not wanting to give up a talent like Williams considering that he’s a rising stud center who’s still only 24. That said, Brown, who’s only a year older and plays arguably the second most valuable position in the game today at the wing, is already an established star in this league with far less baggage than the fourth-year big man.
Don’t get us wrong, we at HH absolutely adore Robert Williams and would love nothing more than to see him and Brown remain a part of the Boston Celtics organization for years to come, but if he’s not on the table for a Durant blockbuster yet your star wing is, then who on earth would it take for the front office to ever part ways with him?
Welp, if we had to guess, it would likely be for one of these two players:
