When it comes to the rest of the Boston Celtics offseason, inactivity from the front office might actually be the best course of action — unless, of course, you believe the current core can’t repeat a run through the east and need a Kevin Durant trade to get over the NBA Finals hump.
In acquiring Malcolm Brogdon via trade and signing Danilo Gallinari with the taxpayer’s mid-level exception, the Cs have bolstered their primary weakness during the end of Boston’s postseason run this past spring.
Still, though, both are on expiring deals (Gallinari owns a player option in 2023-24) and could theoretically be used in another deal if neither is deemed to be a long-term piece of the Boston Celtics pie.
According to CelticsBlog’s Jack Simone, Brogdon has less value on the trade market than his second unit backcourt counterpart, Derrick White, who was acquired during this past February’s trade deadline.
In speaking of a mock trade that would send White to the Dallas Mavericks for Maxi Kleber, Reggie Bullock and a first-round pick, Simone said this:
“If Brogdon manages to stay healthy and prove that he can be a reliable option, both of those trade options would work with him inserted, too. But at this point in his career, White is probably worth more on the trade market.”
Derrick White will only be traded by the Boston Celtics if he is used as the main trade chip for a ‘bigger fish’ — this, at least, according to MassLive’s Brian Robb. Ipso facto, a deal where White is flipped into two lesser pieces to add depth isn’t all too likely.
What would be more likely is White being paired with Jaylen Brown in the eventual Kevin Durant blockbuster (anytime now Sean Marks) or in an arrangement that brings back a Bradley Beal or Donovan Mitchell type.
Again, though, there is no urgent need for a move of any kind from the Celtics front office. White has three years left on his contract and just proved to be a perfect sixth-man for the Cs during their run to the Eastern Conference championship.
If a deal were to go down to land any significant asset, however, it does appear likely that White would be involved.
